What Is The Keto Or Ketogenic Diet And Why Does It Work

The ketogenic diet has been positioned in recent years as one of the most sought after to burn fat quickly. It is a type of dietary restriction that seeks one thing: to reduce the presence of glucose in the body to force the body to use fat stores and, thus, lose weight.

The glucose that flows through the blood (and which is also stored in the liver or muscle in the form of glycogen) is the main source of energy for the entire body, especially for fundamental organs such as the brain or the heart. Thus, as long as there is glucose (or in its defect glycogen) the human body will not use its fat reserves, which is what is needed to lose weight.

So the goal of the keto or ketogenic diet is to drastically decrease the amount of glucose to ‘force’ the body to burn fat stores. A process that the human body achieves by transforming fat into ketone bodies, a substitute energy source for glucose, and reaching ketosis. A state that can be found out because it gives signs such as bad breath, an increased feeling of thirst, dizziness, nausea or irritability.

The Keto or ketogenic diet: reduce carbohydrate consumption
The human body obtains glucose from simple carbohydrates (which can be found in milk, sugar or fruit) or from complex carbohydrates (which can be found in cereals, flours, pasta or legumes) . So, this diet consists of reducing the intake of these foods and increasing the content of proteins and healthy fats. Specifically, it is committed to consuming 50-60% fat, 20-30% protein and leaving 10%, or less, to carbohydrates.

Thus, ketogenic diets are characterized by five-meal menus featuring eggs, meat, dairy, vegetables, fish, nuts, and seeds. And foods rich in healthy fats such as avocado or fish such as tuna, cod or salmon tend to have a lot of presence.

The problem of the ketogenic diet or keto: this type of food restriction requires the supervision of a professional. In addition, it is an effective diet but it cannot be prolonged in time because it is hard to follow and unbalanced. Therefore, it is not suitable for the treatment of obesity.

The ketogenic diet, according to science
A new scientific study, led by the groups of Ana B. Crujeiras and Felipe F. Casanueva from IDIS-CHUS in Santiago, has shown that a very low-calorie ketogenic diet has highly beneficial effects on reducing fat and that, in addition, this nutritional intervention involves epigenetic mechanisms, a key finding for treating obesity and seeking new therapies typical of personalized medicine.

The finding, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition and led by CIBEROBN scientists and collected by EFE, demonstrates for the first time the relationship between this type of ketogenic diet (emulates the effects of fasting on the body) and epigenetics -the environmental circumstances that modify gene expression- in obesity.

Research showed that this type of nutritional intervention can induce a weight loss of up to 20 kg, especially visceral fat, and preserve muscle mass. “In addition, patients who follow this nutritional intervention present a reduction in appetite, improvements in sleep quality, sexual function and, ultimately, in overall quality of life,” says Ana B. Crujerias.
